Drehbuchautor Steve Blackman sagte „Den of Geek“ über den „The Umbrella Academy“-Soundtrack: „Musik ist eine so wichtige Sache für mich und ich nehme mir wirklich Zeit, um die Songs auszuwählen.“
Und weiter: „Wir machen die Dinge in der Show anders. Die meisten Shows beenden die Szene, die Dreharbeiten und fügen dann die Musik hinzu. Ich wähle die Songs meistens im Voraus. Ich habe sie in die Skripte aufgenommen. Manchmal höre ich sogar ein Lied und dann entscheide ich, welche Szene ich mit diesem Lied im Kopf schreiben möchte.“
Szenen in „The Umbrella Academy“ scheinen also nicht nur maßgeschneidert für das jeweilige Lied zu sein, sondern sind es tatasächlich. Steve Blackman erklärte zusammen mit seinem Komponisten Jeff Russo:
„Ich höre manchmal ein Lied und stelle mir dann eine Szene vor. Sehr früh denke ich: 'Ich möchte dieses Lied über eine Kampfszene bringen' und ich arbeite das in das Drehbuch ein - was oft rückwärts ist. Viele Leute fügen nachträglich Musik hinzu. Ich arbeite umgekehrt.“
